Skate Fishing

Oban the skate capital of Europe

The deep waters of the Firth of Lorn and Sound of Mull need no introduction to the keen skate angler. The deep waters here hold a resident skate population and weather and tide permitting it is possible to fish for them throughout the year.

Fishing in depths of several hundred feet tackle needs to be up to the job and we use quality Penn Ally 80lb class standup rods and Penn 114H reels loaded with braided line. We prefer braid to nylon as it keeps you in positive contact with what's happening several hundred feet down on the sea bed.

The stern door and platform fitted on Blue Fin takes the strain out of landing large skate and we have onboard heavy duty butt pads and fighting harnesses to help take the load when fighting a big fish that may well weigh over 200lbs.

We fish a max of four rods due to the depth and you are welcome to bring your own tackle.  However we do request that anglers use barbless hooks and the recommended weight of lead on the day. All available onboard.

We recommend a minimum 80lb class tackle so as to put the odds on allowing the fish to be brought to the surface fairly quickly.  This means the fish are less stressed and have a better chance of survival as we operate a strict catch and release policy.  Once boated your skate will be measured, weighed, photographed and released.
